Little Dragons (4 to 7 Years)
Our Little Dragon Self Defence Classes are structured for our students to learn the basics of Self Defence and also fundamental life skills. All our classes are conducted in a relaxed yet firm manner with the emphasis on sharing, play and working together. Mutual respect is nurtured as well as a healthy sense of fair play.
A strong emphasis in class is placed on play as well as learning life skills such as “Magic Words” Stranger Danger, awareness drills, health and well being drills etc. We encourage each Little Dragon’s individuality to promote their self esteem which in turn improves their confidence. Teamwork skills are also an important facet of our classes developing personal and social skills as well as a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
Friendship, Fun, Fair Play, Family Atmosphere are all key ingredients to our classes which are always well attended. Classes are mixed and can have students ranging from 4 years to 7 years of age and they are always full of fun, noise and laughter!
We have had good results in the past with children who have learning difficulties, with schools reporting back to the parents within a few months that their child’s concentration and interaction skills have improved.
Our Little Dragons Curriculum is designed to prepare them for the day they are old enough to move up into our Kenpo Kids Class.
Old and new students are always welcome to come and take part in the classes.
Kenpo Kids (7 to 12 Years)
Our Kenpo Kids Self Defence Classes are structured for our students to learn the basics of Progressive Kenpo. All our classes are conducted in a relaxed yet firm manner with the emphasis on sharing, play, Fun, Family Atmosphere and working together. Mutual respect is nurtured as well as a healthy sense of fair play.
Individuality is encouraged to promote self esteem which in turn improves their self confidence. Teamwork is also encouraged to develop personal and social skills as well as a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Students are nurtured to work at their own level rather than trying to keep up with the “Jones’. Physical disabilities are worked around with techniques and movements being modified to suit the individual’s requirements. Here at Gary Ellis Family Martial arts Studio we tailor the system (Kenpo) to the Individual and not the Individual to the System.
Our classes are mixed and can have students ranging in age from 7 years to 14 years of age. We have had good results with children who have learning difficulties over the years with schools reporting back after a few months of training with us to the parents that their child’s concentration and interaction skills have improved.
The Kenpo emphasis of the curriculum is on working the core principles of motion and self defence in the early stages rather than on learning too many sequences of motion. As the student advances in rank they are taught more sequences of motion which become steadily more sophisticated in both structure and application. Our Curriculum is designed so that in time and when they are old enough our Kenpo Kids can move up to the Adult Progressive Kenpo Class.
Friendship, Fun, Fair Play, Family Atmosphere are all key ingredients to our classes which are always well attended. Life skills, Social Skills, Stranger Danger and Bullying are all subjects which are regularly covered in our classes.
Old and new students are always welcome to come and take part in the classes.
Beginner classes are available as are private lessons.

The classes are conducted in a relaxed yet firm manner with the emphasis on sharing and working together. Mutual respect is nurtured as well as a healthy sense of fair play.
We encourage both individuality and also teamwork to promote confidence, self esteem, personal and social skills as well as a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
Our classes are mixed and can have students ranging in age from 12 years to 70 years of age. Students are encouraged to work at their own level rather than trying to keep up with the “Jones’. Physical disabilities are worked around with techniques and movements being modified to suit the individual’s requirements.
In Progressive Kenpo we “Tailor the System to the Individual and not the Individual to the System.
Our Progressive Kenpo curriculum is loosely based on my Teacher Lee Wedlake’s curriculum with the emphasis on working the core principles of motion and self defence in the early stages rather than on learning too many sequences of motion. As the student advances in rank they are taught more sequences of motion which become steadily more sophisticated in both structure and application.
Techniques are taught against grabs, pushes, punches, locks, chokes, strangle holds, multiple attacks, throws, combinations and weapons. As the student becomes more adept we teach the use of weapons such as stick, staff, nunchaku and knife.
Friendship, Fun, Fair Play, Family Atmosphere are all key ingredients to our classes which are always well attended.
Old and new students are always welcome to come and take part in the classes.
Beginner classes are available as are private lessons.
Tai Chi Chuan
Our Tai Chi Classes are conducted in a friendly relaxed atmosphere with people of all ages taking part.
The emphasis is on relaxation, fun and natural work. Students may wear what they like, with the objective being to feel comfortable with yourself, as Tai Chi is about finding an old friend that you perhaps, once knew. The exercises and postures are natural and nothing is forced. Tai Chi is a form
of moving meditation with each individual on their own personal journey.
Our classes are one hour long and we always come away feeling refreshed and relaxed.
We teach Cheng Man Ching’s 37 Step Short Form, Push Hands and Chi Kung.
There is no pressure to learn as that defeats the object of the class which is to distress and relax.
Each student progresses along their journey at their own pace.
Tai Chi is particularly suited for older people as the exercises and postures are natural and gentle with nothing forced.

We can hold specialised self defence classes and courses on request.
